Poetry is revered as among our highest cultural achievements. Its near-universal presence in oral and written traditions attests to its grip on the human psyche. In today’s world, however, when times seem to be spinning out of control, poetry can appear a trivial afterthought to the problems of real life. Sure, it may offer a moment of solace or pleasure, but not much in the way of practical solutions. Or maybe that’s not the whole story. In this course we’ll explore poems that show us how poetry makes sense of—and helps us deal with—excessive human folly and its consequences.
Presenter: Barton Kunstler, Ph.D., has written and studied poetry all his life. He holds an undergraduate degree in English literature and a doctorate in Classical Studies from BU. His poems have been published in various venues and he has run writing and communication programs. He was a full professor and program director at Lesley University’s School of Management.
